Is Perth tap water safe to drink? It’s the question every local ends up asking sooner or later, and the honest answer depends on who you ask.

Some swear by it. Some will not touch it without a filter. Some buy bottled water by the case.

The actual evidence sits in a set of public reports most people have never read.

Here is a look at what those reports say and just as importantly, what they do not.

Does Perth tap water meet Australian drinking water guidelines

Perth’s scheme drinking water meets the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines and is considered safe to drink by both the Water Corporation and the WA Department of Health, which independently regulates drinking water quality in this state.

That is the headline.

But meets the guidelines is a more nuanced statement than most people realise and there are a handful of things worth understanding before taking it as the complete answer.

How is Perth’s water quality tested and reported

The Water Corporation publishes a Drinking Water Quality Annual Report each year, broken down by supply locality, roughly your suburb.

It reports on two broad categories. Health related parameters test for things that could actually make you sick, including microbiological contaminants such as E. coli and naegleria, along with chemicals and a long list of metals.

Aesthetic parameters test for things that affect taste, smell, appearance and household function, including hardness, chlorine, pH, sodium and turbidity.

The numbers behind the reports are substantial.

The Water Corporation collects more than 74,000 samples a year across its network and runs more than 350,000 individual analyses through independent laboratories.

The Department of Health audits the whole system and Perth water consistently passes its health related testing.

Is Perth tap water safe from bacteria, chemicals and PFAS

The health related results give Perth residents a reasonable amount of confidence. On microbiological compliance, Perth scheme water consistently meets the guidelines for E. coli and thermotolerant naegleria, so the risk of getting sick from drinking Perth tap water in a healthy adult is very low.

On chemical health parameters, Perth water meets the limits set out in the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines and on PFAS, the so called forever chemicals that have become a global water quality concern, the Water Corporation reports its scheme water is compliant with the latest draft Australian guidelines.

Disinfection also does its job. The chlorine residual maintained throughout Perth’s more than 35,000 kilometres of mains, typically 0.4 to 1.0 mg per litre, keeps the water safe from treatment plant to tap.

If the only question is whether Perth tap water will make you sick today, the reports say almost certainly not.

Perth water hardness and sodium levels by suburb

The reports also reveal some things the public messaging tends to gloss over. Aesthetic compliance sits well below health compliance.

Health related compliance in Perth runs close to 100 percent, while aesthetic compliance is consistently lower, with around 7 percent of aesthetic analyses in recent reporting years falling outside the recommended limits.

That does not mean the water is unsafe, it means the water does not always meet the guidelines for taste, smell, appearance and household function.

The most common aesthetic issues in Perth are hardness, taste and odour problems from chlorine and elevated sodium in some areas.

Hardness also varies more than most people expect from suburb to suburb.

The guideline sets 200 mg per litre of calcium carbonate as the aesthetic limit for hardness and two Perth localities exceed it routinely, Two Rocks at around 228 mg per litre and Yanchep at around 204 mg per litre, both flagged in the Water Corporation’s reports as having elevated hardness characteristic of the source.

At the other end of the scale, Dwellingup runs at around 29 mg per litre, while most inner Perth suburbs sit in the moderately hard range of 60 to 120 mg per litre, with a city wide average around 96 mg per litre.

Hard water is not a health issue but it is a quality of life issue that affects every household it touches.

Sodium is the one that tends to surprise people.

The guidelines suggest sodium concentrations should ideally stay under 180 mg per litre for taste, and people on low sodium diets are advised to keep it under 20 mg per litre.

Average sodium concentrations across Perth supply zones have been reported in the range of 24 to 122 mg per litre, meaning some districts genuinely have salty tasting drinking water by Australian standards.

For most people this makes no real difference.

For someone managing a strict low sodium diet for blood pressure or heart conditions, drinking a litre or two of Perth tap water a day can quietly add a sodium load they had not accounted for.

Chlorine has a real impact on shower water too. At 0.4 to 1.0 mg per litre it is doing exactly what it is meant to. The chlorine keeps the water clean and safe. Another factor is your own plumbing which the Water Corporation has no way to test since their responsibility ends at the mains.

Older Perth homes built before the 1980s can have copper and lead in the internal pipework and water that sits overnight can pick up noticeably more dissolved metal than the same tap run an hour later.

That one is a house problem, not a Perth water problem and no public report is ever going to fix it for you.

Disinfection by products is the last piece. Chlorine reacting with organic matter creates compounds like trihalomethanes, these are tested and regulated and Perth passes comfortably.
