Hard water in Perth, why your shower screens keep going cloudy and how to fix it

Every Perth homeowner knows what we are talking about. A frameless glass shower screen that was crystal clear when the bathroom was finished, slowly accumulating a white film no matter how often you scrub it.

Maybe you’ve tried the vinegar trick. The expensive bathroom cleaner from Bunnings. One of those scale removers a friend swore by. But it always comes back within a fortnight.

The frustrating part is that it’s not your cleaning. It’s your water. And once you know why it’s happening, the fix becomes obvious.

Why does hard water leave a white film on shower glass

The white haze on your shower screen isn’t soap scum, despite what most cleaning products would have you believe.

It’s limescale, made up of calcium and magnesium minerals dissolved in your water. When water dries on glass, the water evaporates and it leaves the minerals behind. Which is what that white build up is.

With every shower, those tiny mineral deposits build up into a hard, chalky layer that bonds tightly to the glass surface.

If left long enough that layer doesn’t just sit on top of the glass. It actually etches into it. Toughened shower glass has a microscopic texture that traps mineral deposits and over time those deposits can permanently scar the surface. Once that happens, no amount of cleaning will bring the glass back. You’re looking at replacement.

Why is Perth’s water so hard

Perth has hard water and the reason comes down to geology.

Roughly half of Perth’s scheme water is drawn from groundwater and most of that comes from two big underground aquifers: the Gnangara Mound to the north of the Swan River and the smaller Jandakot Mound to the south.

Both sit within layers of limestone. As rainwater filters down through the limestone over decades, it picks up calcium carbonate. By the time the water is pumped out and treated, it’s carrying a mineral load.

Perth’s water hardness is measured in milligrams of calcium carbonate per litre, and the numbers tell the story clearly enough. The Australian Drinking Water Guidelines flag anything over 200 mg per litre as elevated hardness. Two Rocks measures around 228 mg per litre, well into that elevated range, and Yanchep sits close behind at around 198. Most inner Perth suburbs land somewhere between 60 and 120 mg per litre, which counts as moderately hard. While areas fed largely by the hills dams, Dwellingup among them can sit as low as 29.

So if you’re in the northern corridor you’re dealing with some of the hardest water in metropolitan Australia. Head further south and it generally gets softer.

Perth’s water calcifies and the northern suburbs get it worst of all.

Why shower screens attract limescale build up in Perth

Glass shower screens are basically the perfect environment for limescale to form.

You’ve got heat which speeds up the precipitation of minerals out of solution. You’ve got repeated wetting and drying, which lays down fresh mineral deposits multiple times a day. You’ve got a smooth vertical surface that water sheets down, depositing minerals as it goes. And you’ve got soap residue which gives the minerals something extra to bond to.

Tapware and showerheads also have this same problem. That white crust around your showerhead is the same scale and it’s a major reason showerheads lose pressure and start spraying water in different directions.

The same process is happening inside your hot water system’s heating element, inside your dishwasher and inside any appliance that heats water.

What doesn’t fix hard water stains in Perth showers

Before we get to what does work it’s worth running through the things people commonly try that don’t really solve the problem.

Vinegar and lemon juice work as a one off clean for light scale but they’re just removing what’s already there. They don’t stop new scale forming and within a couple of weeks you’re back where you started. The acid in repeated vinegar use can also dull certain finishes on tapware over time.

Bench top water filters and jug filters do nothing for hardness. They’re designed to improve drinking water taste by removing chlorine and some sediment. They don’t touch calcium and magnesium, and even if they did, they only treat the small amount of water you actually drink.

Daily squeegeeing helps a lot if you’re disciplined about it. But it’s a habit that needs to be done everyday.

How to permanently fix hard water on shower screens

The only way to stop scale forming on your shower screen for good is to stop the minerals reaching it in the first place. That means treating the water before it ever gets to your bathroom, which is a job for a whole home filtration system installed at the point water enters your property.

There are two main approaches.

Scale reduction filtration

Scale reduction filtration uses specialised media that changes how calcium and magnesium behave in water, converting them into a crystalline form that no longer bonds to surfaces. The water still carries the same mineral content, the minerals simply stay suspended and pass through your plumbing without forming scale. It’s a salt free approach, so there’s no ongoing salt to buy, no waste water, and your drinking water keeps its natural mineral content.

Ion exchange softening

Ion exchange softening takes the more traditional route, removing calcium and magnesium by swapping them for sodium ions. It produces water that feels noticeably softer on the skin, though it adds a small amount of sodium and needs periodic salt top ups. Some homeowners love that softer feel, others prefer to keep the minerals in their drinking water and only soften the hot water lines.

Both approaches can be paired with carbon filtration to deal with chlorine taste and smell at the same time, so you’re solving multiple water quality issues with one system.

What changes after fixing your water

Homeowners who install a proper whole home system with scale reduction or softening tend to notice a similar set of changes.

The shower screen stays clear with just a quick squeegee, sometimes for weeks at a stretch. Tapware and showerheads stop forming that white crust around the nozzles. Glasses come out of the dishwasher without spotting. Soap and shampoo lather better, and you end up using less of both. Towels come out of the wash softer and the hot water system stops working as hard to heat scaled up elements, which extends its life considerably.

The financial case adds up quickly once you factor in the cost of replacing appliances damaged by scale. A hot water system alone can run $2,000 to $3,000 to replace and scale is one of the leading reasons they fail early.

Which water filtration system suits your Perth home

The right setup for your home comes down to three things, how hard your water actually is, the size of your home and whatever other water quality issues you’d like handled at the same time, chlorine and sediment among them.

If you’re in one of the harder-water suburbs in Perth’s northern corridor, scale reduction or softening is going to make the biggest single difference to your home. If you’re in a softer area, you might be better served by a carbon-focused system that prioritises chlorine and sediment removal.

Either way, the cloudy shower screen problem is fixable and it’s fixable for good. Home Filtration WA can assess your water, recommend the right setup for your suburb and your home, and install it as part of a whole home solution.

  • We recently had a whole house water filtration system installed by Home Filtration WA and we honestly couldn’t be happier. Kieren & Julien were both professional and knowledgeable. Definitely not pushy at all like some other companies out there! They took the time to explain everything clearly, answered all of our questions, and made the whole process feel easy and stress-free. The installation itself was completed to a high standard. Since installation, the difference in our water has been so obvious — not only does it taste cleaner straight out of the tap but it feels better on our skin and hair. We’re so glad we chose Home Filtration WA and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them to anyone considering a whole house filter. Absolutely worth it!
